Dial in your takeaway position
Grétar Eiríksson, shows you how you can dial in your takeaway position using the ELVA system
The Power of Instant Feedback: Perfecting Your Golf Takeaway
In the modern era of golf instruction, the days of relying solely on "feel" are behind us. Today, the ELVA system gives measurements of microscopic aspect of the golfers swing in real-time. A perfect example of this is analyzing the takeaway—specifically the P2 position—and using instant data to make immediate corrections.
Diagnosing the Outside Takeaway
The takeaway sets the foundation for the entire golf swing. If the club gets out of position early, the rest of the swing becomes a series of compensations.
In this demonstration, Grétar Eiríksson, reviewed his initial takeaway and suspected the club path was slightly "outside." The ELVA data confirmed this suspicion immediately. At the P2 position (when the club shaft is parallel to the ground), the technology measured a 5-degree club direction.
This positive 5-degree measurement indicated that the club was positioned outside the golfer's hands, with the clubface pointing from right to left. For many players, an outside takeaway can lead to an out-to-in downswing path, often resulting in a weak slice or a pulled shot.
Making the Adjustment for an inside takeaway
Understanding the data is only the first step; applying a physical correction is the next. To fix the outside takeaway and additionally, attempt to shape a draw, the focus was set on bringing the club more inside during the initial movement.
By actively changing the takeaway pattern to keep the club head behind the hands, the golfer aimed to shift the swing path to a more favorable inside-out delivery.
The Results: Data-Driven Improvement
After taking a second swing with the new "inside" feel, both the video replay and the numerical data showed a drastic transformation.
The simulator registered a -5 degree club direction at the P2 position. This complete reversal perfectly illustrated the physical change, the club was now successfully tracking inside the hands.
Why Accurate Measurements Matter
This quick sequence highlights exactly why the ELVA system is revolutionizing game improvement. Accurate measurements eliminate the guesswork of practice. When you have instant, quantifiable feedback, you can immediately verify if what you feel you are doing is actually what is happening. This data-driven approach allows players to identify mechanical flaws, apply targeted corrections, and ultimately get better, faster.
